Dads Unite Around Cars, Cuts, and Kai

Updated: Sep 11, 2019

We haven't brought the dads on our Family Start and Children's Team programmes together since our 'Bro Time' sessions with Norm Hewitt some years ago. So we put on an event around cars, haircuts and kai (food) and hoped dads would come along. It worked!

Dads, some with their tamariki - children, came along for a great morning of fun and education. Men from all walks of life, each with their own unique story, each with their own unique strengths. In common was the fact that these guys were fathers trying to do their best to raise, with their partner (or solo), their child or children.

It didn't take long for men to connect, to talk, to awhi, to support each other. There was loads of laughter, beautiful sunshine, and an atmosphere of brotherhood.

Steve and Scottie, mechanics from Ruakura Tyres and Wheel Alignment, brought a few cars along, one was an old Chrysler Winsor (Scottie tells me there is another like it at Turangawaewae). They spent time covering safety aspects and money saving tips when it comes to cars. It must have been good, there were men milling around afterwards asking loads of questions! There was a tyre changing competition and heaps of spot prizes and giveaways too thanks to Appco.

Here's some feedback from Steve Buck of Ruakura Tyres and Alignment:

Hi Nate,

Thanks for your email, nice to hear that your event was a success, we are very impressed on how you guys made everyone feel so welcome on the day, nice food, nice people and environment.

Thanks for letting us be involved, if we can help in the future just let us know.

Kind regards

Steve Buck

Also supporting the event was a crew of barbers called Fadesquad. These guys are associated with Fresh Barber Cuts and they have all the style and skills needed to make a man look ten years younger! Men put their names down on list and when it was their turn they went to our makeshift barber shop in our washroom area for a cut, BOOM! With some fresh sounds jammin' the place was pumpin'. And to top it all off we put on a mean feed, roast BBQ pork rolls and salad, along with chocolate mud cake and vanilla ice cream.

Before men left we asked them for some feedback because we'd like to continue providing a space for dads that will benefit them and meet their needs. Here's some of that feedback they gave us.

Speakers or topics they’d like at future events included self-worth, how to help raise their children, getting job ready, CVs, mental health, parenting, budgeting, dealing with stress safely just to name a few.

Some of the issues affecting them included judgmental attitudes in the community, violence, peer pressure, providing for the family while trying to stay healthy, broken heart, unemployment, and financial problems.

We appreciate the dads who came to Cars, Cuts and Kai 2019 - watch this space! We'd like to keep this going. Shout outs to our ringawera who did an amazing job, Ruakura Tyres and Wheel Alignment, Appco, Fadesquad, Ashleigh Paige Photography, Brent the Butcher, and everyone else who made this event a success.
